Synopsis
The Hustler isn't what he used to be. But he has the next best thing. A kid who is.
Former pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson decides he wants to return to the game by taking a pupil. He meets talented but green Vincent Lauria and proposes a partnership. As they tour pool halls, Eddie teaches Vincent the tricks of scamming, but he eventually grows frustrated with Vincent's showboat antics, leading to an argument and a falling-out. Eddie takes up playing again and soon crosses paths with Vincent as an opponent.

A film that should be rated X because to me it is pornography.

Paul Newman giving Tom Cruise googly eyes while he destroys John Turturro in a game of pool while Phil Collins' "One More Night" plays in the background is the frontrunner for most romantic moment of the 80's.

in the last year i’ve gotten back into billiards and have played a good amount at one of the iconic chicago locations they shot this in, making this rewatch a lot more engaging than my first time where this was one of three scorsese films i was watching a day. still pretty tame and unremarkable if you’re going to look at it next to the rest of his filmography, but i really couldn’t take my eyes off this thing. works best when it’s just 10 minutes straight of really well-edited pool with blues playing in the background, that final act is honestly mesmerizing. vince wearing a shirt that says “vince” is hilarious. the brief scene where eddie is swimming, just…

Feeling depressed. Needed to watch a comfort film. Scorsese's most underrated. A good winter movie, everything has that grey, frozen, slushy, road salt covered, Midwestern tundra feel to it. Top soundtrack. I want to feel like VINCE, still feel like Fast Eddie after Forest Whitaker guts him.
UPDATE: Getting out of my solipsistic slump here and upon further consideration this movie is the Ur-Tom Cruise movie. I think it's his best performance. There's a whole meta-movie aspect with a post-Risky Business Cruise on the cusp of mega stardom playing off of LEGEND Paul Newman in a movie about learning how to act. Learning how to be a flake but be able to turn it on and off. It's like Eddie…

Trick shots: Pool players use them, and so do directors. The Color of Money has both kinds.

[me, a dummy]: man Scorcese's really whipping the camera around like Paul Thomas Anderson in Boogie Nights oooooh wait a minute.
It's so funny to think that when Paul Newman was 60 years old he was doing raggedy washed-up loser roles like Fast Eddie here and The Verdict and what Tom Cruise at 60 is doing is jumping off planes and parachuting from motorcycle ramps. Newman went quietly (and HANDSOMELY) into that good night and Cruise is trying to go out committing suicide by stunt, a meta-accurate reflection of both their characters in this movie.
Tom is such a little twerp here it's wild, truly foul haircut and punch-me face and shut-up attitude. I'm so used to him in action-messiah…

85/100
One of my most idiosyncratic opinions, reinforced yet again. I get why many folks consider this lesser Scorsese: You've got a very belated sequel to a classic (made by nobody connected to the original, apart from Newman), built in large part around one of Cruise's trademark early callow-grinner roles, culminating in a rare (for Scorsese) moment of unalloyed triumph—captured in '80s freeze-frame, no less! Looks crassly commercial next to his canonical masterpieces, and those inclined to dismiss it as empty flash can also point to the occasional ultra-kinetic nine-ball montages, which are formally analogous to Vincent whipping the Balabushka around like it’s a samurai sword. Certainly I'd concede that it's among his least personal films, more of a for-hire…
